Attitude and the New Year
Don Schmitz / Human Resource Staffing

We find ourselves back at work and the kids in school. Now, we ask ourselves; what does this New Year have in store? One thing we do know is; it's not business as usual but attitude will make the difference.

Most believe 2010 will be a better year, but the red flags are waving; higher healthcare costs, the wars and our own bills could cause any of us to have a meltdown.

Our own positive attitude will be the key to our own success. With the right attitude, anyone can achieve great things. How can we own a positive attitude?

1.Be the best you can be
No one is the best at everything. There will always be someone faster, smarter and better. Focusing on being the best we can be, instead of comparing ourselves to others will help us be more productive.

Set realistic challenging goals for YOU and no one else. The sooner we see our successes as a series of personal bests rather than a contest with other people, the better off we'll be. People like positive people. Co-workers will be attracted by your positive attitude and want to be on your team.

Recently, I spoke with a very successful elderly friend about her success. She stated, “I always read everything I could get my hands on and than discussed what I read with my friends.” So, be sure reading is a part of being the best you can be.

2. Focus on the positive
Instead of thinking about our problems, see issues as challenges. If we focus on being successful, our challenges will become our success. (Maybe not exactly when we want to be successful, but it will come).
Last month; I caught myself being envious of a friend starting a new position. Later, thinking about it more, I discovered the difference between our situations was my friend didn't know about the negative aspects of his new job, he was focusing on the positives. . We get what we focused on . I also spoke with a co-worker who thought she was going to get in a car accident, of course on that same day; she got into a car accident.

3. Embrace the people you love
What is it you love; yourself, you're children, you're parents…your family? Whoever you love, embrace them. Focusing on those you love will provide the necessary motivation to make success happen.
If you love your family, show them! Each morning, take time to think about those you love and give yourself a New Year's self talk. Recommit your goals each day and practice in your mirror; it doesn't talk back.

If we view our body as something that holds us back, we have an unhealthy attitude and need to change the way we think. Yes, we could loose some weight…yes, we could drink less…and yes, we could get more sleep, but why?

4. Make changes along the way
Make adjustments if your plan isn't working. Adjustments are necessary for every good plan to be successful. When you make changes, you are not changing your goal, but the means of reaching your own success.

Take a break now and then as a reward. Don't expect perfection.

Happy people find a way to meet their goals and appreciate success.
